Founder Kara Lochbaum is a professional artist and potter who grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania. Kara received her BFA in Ceramics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and has worked with various mediums, among her favorites was crafting custom wall murals in homes. She currently resides in Brevard, North Carolina where she works in the studio at Mud Dabbers Pottery. In her personal time, Kara loves to fly fish, hike, and kayak.
Her interest in design and decor began at a young age during her family’s Christmas celebrations. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of the community Christmas festival she and her family hosted. Each year their elaborate display would draw in people from all over the surrounding area. The display included a lavish 20ft tall snowman Christmas tree, life-size manger scenes, a tree adorned with free candy canes, a fountain enveloped by a carousel of lights, and a full-size sleigh with reindeer. Though she was surrounded by these grand decorations, each year, Kara’s favorite part of the season was her mother’s handmade additions and bows. This is what inspired Kara to begin helping families decorate for their holiday.
“My wife Kim and I first met Kara when we were looking for help with our Christmas decorations. Kara’s energy and creative style were so impressive, we decided to help her start her business. We want others to experience her talent for making a home more special during the holiday season. Her hand tied custom bows made each room more inviting. “ – Mark Muller
Holidays Unpacked came about rather serendipitously. The Muller Family had just moved to Brevard, and like many families had decorations that spanned generations. Overwhelmed by the sheer amount, Mark and Kim Muller searched for help within the community to organize and display their beloved family heirlooms. While shopping at a local furniture store, Mark inquired about some interior design help, and was given a list of people who may be able to assist him. Shortly after, Kara’s journey began. Led by Mark and Kim’s family friends, Kara and two others from Brevard started work on the main house of the Muller’s new estate.
Shortly after beginning, they found that some pieces had not fared well from the weather and multiple moves. Without these items, it felt like something was missing. Kara remembered the days of her family Christmas festival and the wonderful bows she and her mother would make together. She made one to top the main tree and Mark immediately fell in love with the creative ingenuity that Kara brought to his family’s traditional decorations. He offered her a job decorating the rest of the estate on the spot and Kara’s hand tied bows adorned several of the trees and centerpieces throughout the property. She was also given the go-ahead to shop and curate a beautiful collection to enhance and replace the damaged decor. The Mullers were blown away. The dedication to detail that Kara put into their home inspired Mark to join forces with her to create a business that allows other families to experience the personal touch and care that was put into his home. After the holiday season, Kara brought along a team with her and they meticulously wrapped and packed all of the decorations, so that they could continue to brighten the holidays and hearts of the Muller family for countless generations to come
